Five Magi advance to Day 2 of State Tennis Individual Tournament

GRAND FORKS — Five Minot High boys tennis players began making their way through the singles and doubles brackets of the State Individual Tournament Friday at Choice Health & Fitness in Grand Forks.

Senior Rory Taney represented the Magi in singles, winning in the first round against Grand Forks Red River’s Koby Kuenzel, winning in straight sets of 6-4 and 7-5.

Taney fell out of the quarterfinal round, Gary Wu of Grand Forks Central serving up a straight set win. Taney defeated Colton Shulte of Century and will be fighting for a spot in the fifth place match today against Blake Triebold of Valley City.

The Magicians had two doubles pairs in Mason and Zach Diehl and Peyton Huss and Jack Wolksy. Both doubles pairs fell out of the first round and into the consolation bracket.

“Mason and Zach Diehl lost a tough first round match to a scrappy Fargo Davies team,” Minot High head coach Scott DeLorme said. “Despite the disappointment and to their credit, they came back to best Bismarck High followed by a very good win over an exceptional team from West Fargo Sheyenne.”

Huss and Wolsky fell to a team from Shanley that will be playing in the semifinals today. The pair had a convincing win over the No. 2 seeded team in the west from Legacy to end the day and remain in the tournament.

Zach and Mason Diehl will play Huss and Wolsky for a spot in the fifth place match to begin the day today.

Singles and Doubles play will continue today at 9 a.m. at Choice Health & Fitness in Grand Forks.

Minot High soccer goes 0-2 in state tournament

GRAND FORKS — The Minot High School boys soccer team came up empty during its trip to Grand Forks, losing both of its two games in the Boys State Soccer Tournament.

The Magicians found themselves in Friday’s consolation bracket after suffering a 2-0 defeat to West Fargo late Thursday night. Minot High struggled to penetrate the Packers’ defense all night, recording just one shot on goal.

Meanwhile, West Fargo’s Lucas Simon got the Packers on the board with just under 10 minutes left in the first half, scoring to give his team the 1-0 edge. Daniel Collins delivered the knockout in the 52nd minute, scoring to give the Packers the 2-0 lead in what proved to be the final goal of the night.

With a spot in the fifth-place match still up for grabs, the Magi upped their intensity on offense. Minot High recorded five shots on goal against the Bruins, but none of them found the back of the net.

An early second-half goal by Fargo South’s Alvin Johnson marked the only score of the game as the Bruins advanced with the 1-0 win.

The loss puts an end to the Magi’s season in which the team went 8-6-1 (6-3-1 WDA).
