Christenson, Hall of Fame members to be honored at Vistas tournament

The Magic City Youth Baseball Hall of Fame night on Saturday, during the Minot Vistas American Legion baseball tournament at Corbett Field, will pay special tribute to the late Clarence “Christy” Christenson and raise money for the “Coach Christy Christenson Scholarship Fund” at Minot High School.

Christenson, a Foxholm native, passed away on March 15 in Morgan City, Louisiana. He was 82 years old. The 2003 Hall of Fame inductee helped mold American Legion baseball in Minot, along with other numerous youth baseball programs from the 1950s to the 1970s. Christenson was also the assistant basketball coach at Minot High for nearly 20 years, which prompted his move to Louisiana in 1973. He joined Minot State teammate Dale Brown at Louisiana State University to help coach the LSU men’s basketball team. In 1979, Christenson switched over and assisted with the women’s basketball program at LSU.

Drawings and a 50/50 raffle will be held on Saturday for the Christenson memorial scholarship fund. Entries into the drawings can be purchased at Corbett Field throughout the day. Some of the prizes include a Dale Brown autographed basketball and book, a jewelry package and a $250 Wal-Mart gift card.

The Magic City Youth Baseball Hall of Fame class of 2016, which includes Gary Kelly, Kevin Kelly, Ryan Kragh and Dick Maner, will also be recognized and given the honor of throwing out a pitch between the two semifinal games played on Saturday. That is scheduled for roughly 6:45 p.m. but depends on the tournament action that happens earlier in the day.

The Minot Vistas tournament runs from Friday to Sunday at Corbett Field. To start, it’s a four-team round-robin style tournament with everybody playing everybody once. Then, the top team in the group will take on the bottom team and second will play third in the evening games on Saturday.

The championship game and the third-place game will be on Sunday.

On Friday, the Vistas will play Winnipeg South at 2 p.m. and then Pierre Post 8 at 7 p.m. They conclude the group stage Saturday morning against Inside Pitch at 11:30 a.m.
