ORCS sweeps past DL-B into District 12 tourney title match

BURLINGTON Prior to Friday night, the Our Redeemer’s Christian School volleyball team hadn’t played a competitive match in more than a week.

The time off didn’t seem to bother the Knights at all. ORCS swept past Des Lacs-Burlington in the semifinals of the Class B District 12 volleyball tournament in Burlington. ORCS won 25-10, 25-19 and 25-17.

“The girls played really well,” ORCS coach Kara Nunziato said. “It was their first competitive match in a week-and-a-half.”

DL-B’s Kayla Schaefer opened the match with a kill to give the Lakers a brief 1-0 lead in the opening contest. ORCS, however, responded with a 10-1 run to build a 10-2 lead. From there, the Lakers got no closer than six points, and ORCS cruised to a 15-point win.

In the second game, ORCS started fast, scoring 10 of the first 12 points. The Lakers countered with a 10-2 run late in the contest, but the deficit was too great to overcome.

“We knew ORCS would come out hot,” DL-B coach Tarra Hysjulien said. “They were after everything.”

In the third game, DL-B built an early 6-3 lead. But the Knights countered with an 18-5 run to complete the sweep.

“We definitely saw some things,” the DL-B coach said.

Caitlyn Vogel finished with 10 kills in the loss for DL-B, while Schaefer had eight.

Morgan Olson paced ORCs with 17 assists, eight kills and four aces. Lauren Hendrickson added 12 digs for the Knights.

ORCS will move on to play Bishop Ryan in the District 12 tournament title match on Monday night.

DL-B will face Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood in one of two region-qualifiers, also on Monday.

Lewis & Clark-Berthold will play Glenburn in the first region-qualifying match on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

In other action Friday night, Berthold defeated South Prairie in three games (25-17, 25-16, 25-14), while M-L-S topped Surrey in four games (18-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-10).
