Veteran wreaths to be laid Dec. 17

Richard Reuer Minot Find a Way to Serve is this year’s Wreaths Across America theme in remembering our fallen, honoring those who serve and teaching our children the value of freedom. In the past nine years Minot Wreaths Across America and Minot Civil Air Patrol has been every year sharing the Wreaths Across America mission throughout our community. Every year, throughout the year veterans displays have been set up at the Grand Hotel, Ward County Historical Society – Pioneer Village Museum and Dakota Square Mall, just to name a few reminding our community to never forget ...

No need to apologize for diversity

James Maxson Minot In youth hockey in British Columbia, I have recently seen what could be described as evidence of “the great replacement” that is feared by so many. The Port Moody Panthers have players whose family ancestries include Vietnam, India, South Korea, China, Japan, Brazil, the USA, Ukraine and Canadians of various European descent. Several of the players are of mixed race. What are the differences between this team and the youth hockey team I follow in Minot?        Call me a fool, but I don’t see differences. I see kids from good families. I see nice ...

Shriners statue shows helpfulness

James Marples Longview, Texas Having family in Minot and area, I read The Minot Daily News: “Minot Masonic Center to dedicate Shriners statue” (Oct 21 issue).  When I was growing-up in Kansas, my folks took me along on a trip to Manitoba, Canada. We passed through Minot. My dad was a member of the Masons and Shriners and he contributed personally to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. I am pleased that the Shriners exist as part of the Masonic family of organizations.  When I was a kid, a man had to be a Knight Templar in York Rite Masonry and/or a 32nd degree ...

Burden of proof falls on victims

Edana Kitzmann Minot 250 rape kits need to be processed so the pursuit of justice can be accomplished or at least begun. Anyone who has been a victim of a horrendous crime finds out real quick that the burden of proof that the alleged criminal is guilty falls on the victim. And that the criminal can lie and have no burden of proof of their innocence. The guilty verdict has to be proven by the victim. I personally know of a victim being also falsely accused by the criminal and the burden of proof of innocence was put on the falsely accused (who was also the victim previously). ...

Deer hunting just got more challenging

Steve Moen Minot With all the craziness going on today it makes deer hunting so much more challenging than it used to be. Now we have to wonder if the buck we have in our sights is really a buck or maybe he identifies as a doe. Or maybe the doe tag we’re about ready to fill identifies as a buck or maybe even a coyote. How are we to know? I know the tags around here are for “any” antlered or antlerless but what about one that only has antlers on one side? Is this one transitioning from antlered to antlerless or vice versa? Then too the tags that are specific to whitetail or ...

People of faith respond to ‘truth matters’

Denise A. Dykeman Rev. Ellery Dykeman Janet Fisher Barb Solberg Minot As people of faith, we are writing in response to the letter to the editor titled “Pronouns Matter Because Truth Matters.” First off, let’s discuss the differences between biological sex, gender, and gender identity. Sex is a label — male or female — that you’re assigned by a doctor at birth based on the genitals you’re born with and the chromosomes you have. However, that doesn’t fully capture the complex biological, anatomical, and chromosomal variations that can occur in humans. ...
