Proposed TR Library not dead

Bruce Pitts

A recent column by Mike Jacobs titled “TR Library faces cuts” has generated questions from concerned citizens about the fate of the TR Presidential Library being built in Dickinson, N.D. I would like to take this opportunity to address them.

Like everyone else, we at the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the legislative session, and anticipating what the possible changes in funding for the TR Presidential Library will mean to the project.

First and foremost, we know that the North Dakota 65th Legislative Assembly has had and continues to have a challenging session. The tasks before them are daunting, to say the least, and they are working diligently to do what is best for the state on all levels. We commend our legislators for their faithful efforts.

One particular question that has arisen from the public is whether or not the proposal described by Mr. Jacobs in his column means the death of the TR Presidential Library project.

The answer is no. The state has shown unwavering support of the presidential library since its initial appropriation in 2013 and continues to do so. Throughout the session, we have been in close communication with our legislators, three of whom serve on the TRPLF Board of Directors, and with the governor’s office. They are supportive and committed to helping the TR Presidential Library project succeed. Equally important is the backing of the City of Dickinson, which has been a steadfast supporter of the TR Presidential Library since its inception.

At this point, the outcome of the legislative session is unknown. The TRPLF remains confident and continues to move forward with its plans to build the TR Presidential Library in Dickinson, starting with construction of the Elkhorn Ranch cabin replica this summer. Programming planning is under way, which will inform the design of the buildings and grounds.

As the Legislature finishes its work within the next few weeks, we will know more. We remain committed to keeping the public informed of our progress and will provide timely updates as they become available.
