Storm stirs dust in region
A dust storm triggered multiple hazard warnings by the National Weather Service on Thursday, May 14. Southwestern winds of 30 mph with gusts up to 54 mph caused a blowing dust warning which ended Thursday evening, but a high wind warning and red flag warning will remain in place until Friday, May 15, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., respectively.
The Weather Service forecasters predict the wind will continue through Friday night, with western winds of 22-31 mph and gusts as high as 44 mph.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol urged drivers to slow down and avoid travel due to low to no visibility caused by the blowing dirt. If travel is required, the Highway Patrol recommends to turn on headlights, increase following distance and to be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Pulling trailers or driving high-profile vehicles is also strongly discouraged by the Highway Patrol.
