SURREY – A five-way tie in a Surrey Park Board race could be decided at the Surrey City Council’s reorganizational meeting July 6.

A recount has confirmed that five individuals – an incumbent and four others – each received three write-in votes for an open seat on the park board in the June 9 election. The Ward County recount board met Monday, June 29, to certify the results. There were 57 Surrey ballots listing a write-in choice for park board.

A second park board seat also was decided by write-in votes. Incumbent Jonathan Yearian received four write-in votes and would retain his seat if he accepts the position.

Ward County Auditor Marisa Haman said any of the individuals in the five-way tie can remove themselves from a potential drawing for a winner by signing their intention not to accept the position before the city’s July 6 meeting.

The Surrey City Council will consider the city’s official election results at its reorganizational meeting, at which it will deal with the park board positions and seat its new members. Surrey voters elected three council members June 9. Two people ran and were elected, and an incumbent council member who did not run received the most write-in votes for the third open seat.

Starting at $3.75/week.
