Duane Kenneth Heidlebaugh, 93, Knox, died at the Heart of America Medical Center on Saturday, January 20, 2024. Duane was born in Rugby on March 25, 1930 to Kenneth Emerson and Helen Cora Corneliuson Heidlebaugh. He was raised in Pierce County and graduated from Rugby High School in 1950. He started farming soon after high school and developed into maintaining a dairy herd and stock cattle. He married Lois Elaine Chilson in Rugby on June 20, 1953. Lois died on July 25, 1972. He later married Beverly Mahle on December 7, 1973 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Beverly died June 18, 2002. He continued his work until he retired in October 2023.
He served his community by serving on the Farmers Union Oil Company Board of Directors from 1974-1994 and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3834. In 1962 he received the Outstanding Young Farmer Award from the Rugby Jaycees.
Duane enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting during his lifetime.
He leaves behind his children, Marilyn Vargas – Killeen, Texas; Marlys and her husband Kevin Koucic – Southgate, Michigan; Randy – Rugby; and Linda Richter – Warroad, Minnesota. He also leaves his brothers, Gary – Albuquerque, New Mexico and Curtis – Colville, Washington and his long time companion, Jean Diehl. He also leaves his step-children, Deb and her husband Greg Moller – Leeds; Sheryl and her husband Ron Volk – Mandan; Connie Stone – Java, South Dakota ; Bill and his wife Dawn Mahle – Wolford; and Carla and her husband Mike Becker – Independence, Missouri. He also leaves 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and 15 step grandchildren and 13 step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his two wives, his parents, a sister, LaVerne Moe; a grandson, Donnie McKay, and step grandson, Travis Stone.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 27th at 10:30 A.M. at the Niewoehner Funeral Home. Duane will be buried in the Knox Lutheran Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call at the funeral home after 8:00 A.M. on Saturday.
