Purchases approved as NAWS water nears

JILL SCHRAMM/MDN The Northwest Area Water Supply biota treatment plant, shown near Max May 31, could be operational by August.

The Northwest Area Water Supply biota treatment plant near Max could begin startup in late August, with Lake Sakakawea water flowing to Minot by September or October, according to information provided to the Minot City Council Monday, June 1.

With those dates nearing, the council approved purchasing equipment and vehicles for the plant. Funding will come from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, but the city must make the purchases and request reimbursement from the North Dakota Department of Water Resources (DWR). The council approved a $350,000 budget amendment for equipment that includes a ski steer, pickup, forklift, mower and two SUVs.

According to the Public Works Department’s Utilities division, the equipment is needed to perform maintenance tasks such as grounds keeping and snow removal and to transport staff between Minot and Max.

The City of Minot is part of a three-way agreement with the DWR and Bureau of Reclamation to operate and maintain the biota treatment plant. The city originally prepared a budget for fiscal years 2024-2026 that was approved by the bureau, but due to delays in start up of the plant, the purchase of larger equipment was held off until the beginning of operations was more clear, according to information provided to the council.

Starting at $2.99/week.
