Clayton Mayer, 89, passed away on Sunday December 17th 2023 at Somerset Court Minot North Dakota.

Clayton was born on April 18, 1934 in Streeter, North Dakota to Gus and Agnes (Deutscher) Mayer and was raised on a farm in Montpelier, North Dakota. He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1952.

On December 9th 1955 he married Florence Ley from Jamestown and Clayton became a Journeyman Electrician. Soon after, Clayton and Florence relocated to Minot to be closer to work related to Minot Air Force Base and growing defense construction in Northern parts of North Dakota.

Clayton worked in and around North Dakota as a Journeyman Electrician, and Electrical Contractor who developed and trained 1000s of apprentice electricians and worked on many of Minot’s most well-known landmarks such as Minot Air Force Base Hangers, Fueling Station and multiple Base Housing Projects, Central Campus Remodel, Magic City Campus, Dakota Square Mall, Minot Water Treatment Plant and Multiple Projects at Minot State University as well. He was particularly proud of working on the US Air Force Intercontinental Ballistic Missile systems where he was the foreman for the initial builds as well as retrofit remodels in the early 1970s and often shared stories of being in the missile silo and control room where very few civilians had ever been.

Clayton was known to be a tireless worker who would solve problems others deemed impossible. Clayton would work under any weather conditions or time of day and always deemed his work to be critical to his customer’s success.

Clayton’s proudest achievement was his wife and family and raising his children in Minot North Dakota who would go on to find careers in Medicine, Electrical Contracting and Technology.

Clayton is survived by his wife, Florence Mayer; daughter, Dr. Renae Mayer; sons, Rodney (Denise), Monte and Matthew Mayer; sister, Elaine Redman; grandchildren, David (Stephanie) and Mandi (Frank Williams) Mayer, Joseph Jr. and Sophia Bufogle, and Luke Mayer; and great-grandchildren, Troy Williams, Sutton Mayer and Monroe Mayer

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Merritt, Alvin and Calvin Mayer; sisters, DeElda and Eilleen; son-in-law Josepth Bufogle, Sr.; and daughter-in-law, Ann Meyer.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 from 5-7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home in Minot.
