BISMARCK- Clara Zheng, an eighth grader from Erik Ramstad Middle School in Minot, will represent North Dakota at the National Civics Bee Championship in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, Nov. 11, the Greater North Dakota Chamber (GNDC) has announced.
Zheng earned her spot at the national competition by capturing first place at the North Dakota State Finals of the National Civics Bee, held earlier this year in Bismarck. The event, organized by the GNDC Foundation in partnership with The Civic Trust of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, encourages middle school students to explore civic engagement, leadership and solutions to real-world community challenges.
“This event showcases the energy, curiosity and civic spirit of the next generation,” said Arik Spencer, president and CEO of GNDC, in a news release. “We’re proud of Clara and all the student participants who are learning what it means to lead and strengthen their communities.”
Zheng impressed judges with her civics knowledge, critical thinking and proposal focused on improving mental health support for students. She now joins top finalists from across the nation to compete for college savings prizes, including a $100,000 529 plan for the national champion.
“I felt proud and grateful, not just for myself, but for everyone who supported me along the way. Winning at the state level showed me that my idea can make a real difference and inspired me to keep working toward positive change in my community,” Zheng said in the release.
As she prepares for the National Civics Bee, she’s staying excited for what’s ahead.
“I’m preparing by refining my three-minute speech, practicing answers to possible judge questions and reviewing the study guide to make sure I’m fully ready,” she said. “I’m focusing on confidence, clarity and overall knowledge as I get ready to represent North Dakota in Washington, D.C.”
In 2024, the National Civics Bee Championship welcomed finalists from 28 states. This year, that number grows to 39 states. North Dakota will be represented for the first time.
The 2024 National Champion hailed from Alaska. Essays and applications for the 2026 competition are now being accepted through Feb. 3.
