All in on ‘Wilder Times’

Former ND musician competes in national event

North Dakota native and musician Jeffrey Meyer is on a path to fame and hopes residents of his home state will help take him the rest of the way.

Originally from Wahpeton, Meyer has been living in Santa Cruz, California, for the past four years. He recently was chosen from among more than 23,000 applicants for the Opening Act Competition, in which the winner will receive a $10,000 grand prize and perform at Audacy’s annual “We Can Survive Concert” at the Hollywood Bowl.

Meyer said the competition is open to up-and-coming artists. Meyer survived the first couple of rounds and was just speechless that he made it in the contest.

“I’m looking for the community support of North Dakotans, because I plan on winning it all,” he said.

The way the competition works, Meyer said, is several rounds of voting take place. Starting today, people can vote once a day, every day, through September, on Meyer’s link. The competition is an online platform with contestants from all over the country. Last year’s winner was from Nashville, Meyer said.

People who want to vote for Meyer daily through September can go to jeffreyjammeyer.com and follow the opening act link to vote.

Meyer said he randomly acquired a guitar at a flea market with his grandmother as a kid and never imagined he wouldn’t be able to put it down.

Meyer was in a Fargo-based band for seven years called The Fillers, which achieved some success but ended up disbanding. He moved to the West Coast and decided to go “full throttle” with his latest attempt at getting his music out there, he said.

In December Meyer hooked up with Dave Roe, the last, long-time bassist for Johnny Cash, and created “Wilder Times,” his debut album released on June 3. Meyer said it was epic to get Roe to play on his album.
