ND governor, senators pay tribute to Graham

Flags to be flown half-staff

BISMARCK – Gov. Kelly Armstrong and U.S. Senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer paid tribute to U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC, who died Saturday, July 11.

“North Dakota joins the nation in mourning the loss of Sen. Lindsey Graham, a devoted public servant, statesman and friend,” Armstrong said. “Kjersti and I extend our deepest condolences to Lindsey’s family, friends, the people of South Carolina, and all who had the privilege of knowing and serving with him. His decades of service to our nation will leave an enduring legacy, and he will be greatly missed,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong has directed all U.S. and North Dakota flags to be flown at half-staff until 6 p.m. Saturday, July 18, and encourages North Dakotans to do the same at their homes and businesses, in honor and remembrance of Graham. The governor’s directive is in accordance with a directive from President Donald Trump.

“Mikey and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Senator Lindsey Graham. Lindsey was a good friend and colleague, and we will miss his humor, advice and friendship. He was dedicated to serving the people of South Carolina and the nation. He began his public service in the military – serving 33 years in the Air Force, Air Guard or Reserves – and was a staunch supporter of our men and women in uniform. His leadership on defense, judiciary and budget issues will be felt for years to come. Mikey and I are praying for Lindsey and his family,” Hoeven said on social media.

“I was shocked by the news about Senator Graham this morning (Sunday, July 12). The man was a joy to serve with. I just can’t imagine going to work in the Senate without Lindsey. I’m so sad for his family and pray for them to feel God’s love as they mourn their loss. His counsel and savvy will be deeply missed in the Senate. Lindsey had a unique ability to navigate the biggest issues facing our nation and the world with clarity in the midst of chaos. He’ll also be missed in the cloakroom and around our conference lunches. One of the most important lessons I learned from Lindsey was to never let someone else rob you of your joy. He lived that lesson every day,” Cramer said in a news release.
