BURLINGTON — Fifteen cars of an eastbound BNSF Railway train derailed between Burlington and Des Lacs on Sunday at about 1 a.m.

Lena Kent, general director of Public Affairs for BNSF Railway, said there were no injuries reported in the incident.

Kent said the 15 derailed cars were carrying freight “of all kinds.”

She said local fire departments responded to a fire in containers carrying paper products and frozen foods.

On Sunday afternoon, in response to a request from the Burlington fire chief, Gov. Doug Burgum authorized the North Dakota National Guard to send a single UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter with a 600-gallon water bucket to assist with fire associated with the derailment, according to a posting on Burgum’s Facebook page. The aircraft left Bismarck at 2:32 p.m. Sunday.

“We appreciate the assistance of local responders as additional crews arrive and will begin to restore the tracks to service,” said Kent Sunday afternoon.

She said the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
