A 32-year-old man was taken into custody by Minot police Wednesday evening after his vehicle struck two power poles near Oak Park Theater in northwest Minot, causing a power outage impacting more than 2,700 Xcel Energy customers in Minot, Burlington and Des Lacs.

Police said David Hughes was arrested for DUI and leaving the scene of an accident, and subsequently taken to the Ward County Jail. No major injuries were reported, according to police.

Kathy Aas, a spokeswoman for Xcel Energy, said the power went out at 8:46 p.m. and the power was restored at 9:53 p.m. – a total outage time of one hour and seven minutes.

She said the outage impacted a portion of Minot and the cities of Burlington and Des Lacs.

“A total of 2,728 (customers) were impacted by the outage. Power was restored to 550 customers at 9:48 (p.m.), with the remaining 2,178 customers’ power restored at 9:53 p.m.,” Aas said.

She said two main line high voltage feeder poles were hit by the vehicle when it was traveling west on Fourth Avenue NW in the 1500 block near Oak Park.

Aas said Xcel Energy crews were on site all night and into the early hours of Thursday.

“All repairs were completed around 6 a.m. Oak Park Theater was the only customer still out, waiting on repairs by the owners electrical contractor to complete,” Aas said in an email to the Minot Daily News early Thursday afternoon.
