Multiple wins for Ward County 4-H at District Communication Arts Contest

Ten Ward County 4-H members attended the District Communication Arts contest in Towner at the TGU-Towner High School on May 31.

The group consisted of Elizabeth and Makayla Kraft and Lydia Repnow, Minot; Sadie Lemer, Berthold; Anna and Connor Petersen, Bowbells; Lainey Rockwell and Garrett, Raelyn, and Trent Williams, Ryder.

Age divisions are split into three categories: Cloverbud, who have completed kindergarten through second grade; Junior, youth in grades third through sixth; and Senior, youth in grades seven through their final year in 4-H (18 years old). There are eight different categories to participate in: Demonstration (includes Illustrated Talks), Speech (includes Prepared and Impromptu/Short Take), Interpretive Reading (Humorous and Serious), Dramatic Presentations, Mass Media Presentation (includes Broadcasting, Commercials and 4-H Promotion), Electronic Presentation (includes Video, Website Design, and Software Presentations), FishTank (Youth Entrepreneurship), and Cloverbud.

Ward County 4-H youth received ribbon awards as follows:

-Senior Demonstration-Repnow: “Spaced Out,” Grand Champion. Repnow explained her love for outer space and gave a lesson about the planets and galaxy.

-Senior Dramatic Presentation Team- G. & T. Williams: “Bubbles Rides Again?” Grand Champion. This duo wrote the skit and created the props themselves.

-Senior Electronic Presentation Team- G. & T. Williams: “Commercials: A Lego Stop Motion Film,” Grand Champion. The duo created a stop-motion film from an app and Legos of different commercials for movies

-Junior Demonstration-Lemer: “The Mystery of Equine Coat Color Genetics,” Grand Champion. Lemer explained how different colors of horses occur and how to fill out a Punnett Square.

-Junior Electronic Presentation-R. Williams: “A Trip to Yellowstone,” Grand Champion. R. Williams had close to 1,000 pictures to choose from, but narrowed down photos for her video about her vacation to Yellowstone and Beartooth Pass.

-Junior Interpretive Reading-A. Petersen: “I Have to Go!” by Robert Munsch, Grand Champion.

-Junior Interpretive Reading-M. Kraft: “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” by Jon Scieszka, Honorable Mention.

-Junior Interpretive Reading- Rockwell: “Cowgirl Kate & Cocoa, Chapter 2: The Surprise” by Erika Silverman, Honorable Mention.

-Junior Interpretive Reading-E. Kraft: “The Little Red Hen” by Paul Galdone, Participation.

-Cloverbud Recitation-C. Petersen: “Jack and Jill,” Participation.

Seniors receiving Grand Champion awards, Repnow, G. & T. Williams, were offered scholarships to attend the Extension Youth Conference (EYC) in June at the North Dakota State University campus. The conference is geared toward developing leadership skills and networking with youth across the state.
