STANTON – A Flint Knap-In will be held at Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site near Stanton on Saturday from 9-4 p.m. CDT. Marv Becher, John Martinson and Levi Schoneck will be among those demonstrating the ancient art by making flint arrowheads, knife blades and spear points.

Visitors will have the opportunity to watch the demonstrations, interact with the knappers, try their hand at shaping flint into tools, view rarely-seen knapped tools from the site’s artifact collection and attend special interpretive programs throughout the day.

Flint knapping was an important skill practiced for thousands of years at the Knife River Indian Villages. Native artisans favored the durable Knife River flint which was quarried 60 miles west of the villages and traded across North America. Today, flint knappers keep this ancient craft alive by sharing their knowledge at special events across the country.

The Knap-In at Knife River Indian Villages is free and continues the park’s celebration of the National Park Service Centennial. Knife River Indian Villages NHS is located one-half mile north of Stanton on County Road 37.
