New faces on council

Mark Jantzer was re-elected Minot City Council president at a reorganization meeting Tuesday that seated five new members. Miranda Schuler was elected vice president.

Mayor Chuck Barney presented plaques to out-going members in recognition of their years of service. Leaving the council were Larry Frey in Ward 1, Bob Miller in Ward 2, Jim Hatlelid in Ward 3, Tom Seymour in Ward 5, and Kevin Connole in Ward 7.

In parting remarks, Seymour urged the council to establish a committee to look into ways to utilize technology and the internet to create a hub of information. Seymour served on the council since 2010.

Connole was appointed to the council in December 2011 and was elected to a four-year term in 2012.

Hatlelid served on the council from 1981 to 2004 and again from 2008 to the present. Hatlelid, who spent many years as chairman of the city’s Airport Committee, listed the construction of two airport terminals as the city activities he is most proud of during his 31 years in office.

Frey also called it an “honor and pleasure” to have the support of constituents for the past 32 years on the council. Miller was absent for the outgoing council’s final meeting. Stephan Podrygula, newly elected in Ward 3, also was absent for the reorganizational session.

Seated were Shannon Straight in Ward 1, George Withus in Ward 2, Shaun Sipma in Ward 3 and Kenton Kossan in Ward 7.

New committee appointments also were announced. Chairing committees are: Finance, Dean Frantsvog; Airport and Franchise, Lisa Olson; Liquor/Gambling, Rick Hedberg; Public Works, Schuler; and Community Development, Jantzer.
