Vernon Mersch

Vernon Nic Mersch, 89,

Minot, ND, died Thurs-

day, February 16, 2017 in

a Mohall, ND, nursing

care facility.

Vernon was born on

March 26, 1927, in rural

Hardwick, MN, a son of

Peter and Helen (Ecker)

Mersch. In 1936, the fami-

ly moved to Mantador,

ND. He received his edu-

cation there and at Han-

kinson, ND. He enlisted in

the US Navy and was at

Great Lakes Naval Train-

ing Center at the time of

his graduation from Han-

kinson High School. Dur-

ing World War II he

served in the

Asiatic-Pacific Theater of

Operations. He was

awarded the

Asiatic-Pacific Campaign

Medal and the World War

II Victory Medal.

Upon his return to

North Dakota, he attended

Hanson Mechanical Trade

School in Fargo, ND. After

he graduated he worked

as a mechanic in automo-

tive garages in Wim-

bledon, ND, Jamestown,

ND, and Valley City, ND.

He moved to Minot in Au-

gust of 1954, where he

worked at Fisher Motors

for 12 years and at Westlie

Motor Company from

1966 until his retirement

on April 1, 1992.

Vernon married

Dorothy Verene Grieve in

Valley City on October 16,

1954. Verene passed away

on September 20, 2010.

Vernon was a charter

member of the Mantador

Veterans of Foreign Wars

Post #9317. He was also a

member of the Minot

American Legion Post

#26 and the World War II

Last Man’s Club. He is a

member of Our Lady of

Grace Catholic Church in

Minot.

Vernon is survived by:

his son, Mike, of Minot;

brothers-in-law Bill

Grieve and Al Gorham;

and several nieces and

nephews.

He was preceded in

death by: his wife,

Verene; his parents; sis-

ters, Bonnie Gorham and

Lorraine Payne; and a

brother, Norbert Mersch.
