Where are the goals? Low scoring games dominated NCAA regional hockey games

Goals were hard to find this weekend in the NCAA hockey tournament.

In fact, this was the lowest-scoring regional weekend since the NCAA tournament switched to its current 16-team format in 2003.

There were only 50 goals scored in the 12 NCAA regional games, eclipsing the previous low of 55 set in 2004.

Unless Denver, UMass, Minnesota Duluth and Providence combine for 17 goals in three games at the NCAA Frozen Four in Buffalo’s KeyBank Center, it will also become the lowest-scoring NCAA hockey tournament ever.

That seems like a good bet considering three of the four goalies will enter the Frozen Four on scoreless streaks of more than 100 minutes.

Denver’s Filip Larsson and UMass’s Filip Lindberg both completed their NCAA regionals without allowing a single goal. Meanwhile, Providence’s Hayden Hawkey has a scoreless streak of 108:52.

The fourth goalie in the NCAA Frozen Four, Minnesota Duluth’s Hunter Shepard, had a scoreless streak of more than 90 minutes snapped at the end of the regional final Sunday. But Shepard has allowed just one even-strength goal in his last 371:52 of NCAA tournament play.

There have already been five shutouts in the NCAA tournament, which ties a record set in 2004 and matched in 2006.

Those who attended the NCAA West Regional in Fargo’s Scheels Arena saw just eight goals in three games — and two were empty-netters.

Denver has been able to win despite not generating much offense in the second half of the season. The Pioneers were outshot in both regional games, but didn’t give up anything. Larsson has a .981 save percentage during the playoffs.

Minnesota Duluth is back to its old ways — winning 2-1 games. Their last five NCAA tournament games — excluding empty-net goals — have all resulted in 2-1 Bulldog wins.

The Bulldogs won three consecutive 2-1 games en route to the NCAA title a year ago. They won 2-1 and 3-1 (ENG) games at the regional this weekend in Allentown, Pa.

Starting at $3.75/week.
