Women’s Hockey: Minot State sweeps Jamestown on the road
While the men’s team was sweeping the University of Jamestown at home inside Maysa Arena, the Minot State women’s hockey team was doing the exact same thing, except on the Jimmies’ own ice.
The Beavers opened the two-game series with a 3-0 victory on Friday, Nov. 14, before completing the weekend sweep the following afternoon, defeating the Jimmies, 5-3.
A pair of first-time goal scorers led the offense in the opener. Karlyn Gudz broke a scoreless tie at 4:31 of the second period with her first goal of the season and followed it up with her second at 1:35 of the third frame. Abby Pineau tallied her first goal as well, providing an insurance goal with 3:41 remaining in the game.
Jillian Ackerman earned the win in net for the Beavers, stopping all 17 shots she faced.
Friday’s contest began with a scoreless 20 minutes, but Saturday’s game featured five first-period goals – the first four coming from the Beavers. Kaitlyn Snyder scored less than four minutes into the game. Kinsley Brassard made it 2-0 at 11:42 of the first and Abby Tallman and Krissy Rink struck back to back in the span of 1:35.
Olivia Kirwan added Minot State’s fifth goal, this one coming at 14:41 of the second period after Jamestown’s Maddison Andrew scored twice to cut Minot State’s lead to 4-2.
The Beavers (6-2-5) put 36 shots on starting goaltender Lilah Drew and backup Madelynnee Sylvestre. Drew was pulled 17:45 into the first period after allowing four goals on 13 shots. Sylveestre played the final 42:15, stopping 22 of 23 shots.
Bailey Grunewald got the start in net for the Beavers and picked up the win with an 18-save performance.
The Beavers host Liberty University for a two-game series on Friday, Nov. 21, and Saturday, Nov. 22. Both games are 3:45 p.m. at Maysa Arena.
