Honeybees cruise to 4th straight win
With sole possession of first place in the Northwood League standings up for grabs, the Minot Honeybees used a 10-run third inning to solidify a 17-7 rout of the Madison Night Mares in six innings on Tuesday.
Minot’s 17 runs set a new season high, besting their previous mark of 15, which they did twice in a twinbill against La Crosse on Saturday. It’s the fourth time this season the Honeybees (5-2) have eclipsed a double-digit run output.
Carly Cummings and Bella Cimino led Minot’s offense with three hits each, while Trinity Gregg, Olivia Hernandez and Ashleigh Heiderscheit each added two hits. Taylor Chillingworth belted Minot’s only home run of the night, launching a three-run homer in the sixth inning. Chillingworth and Gregg led the Honeybees with three RBIs. Eight Minot players recorded at least one hit.
The Honeybees plated at least a run in five of the six innings, breaking the game open with a 10-run third, which saw Minot bring 13 batters to the plate. Cimino recorded a pair of hits in the frame, plating Gregg on a single to the shortstop in her second at bat. Minot also took advantage of several Madison miscues, as the Night Mares (4-2) committed four errors leading to three unearned runs. Madison’s pitching staff surrendered seven walks while hitting two other Minot batters.
Heiderscheit improved to 3-0 on the mound this season, allowing five hits and three runs over 4 2/3 innings as the Honeybees stretched their season-high winning streak to four games.
Reganne Bennett suffered the loss for the Night Mares, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Luciana Moreno homered for Madison. Gretta Grassel had a team-high three hits for the Night Mares.
Minot and Madison play again tonight at 6:05 p.m.
