Minot High baseball picks up opening day sweep against Williston

WILLISTON – The Minot High Magicians baseball team is 2-0 after sweeping the Williston Coyotes in a season-opening non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, 5-0 and 11-6.

Four Minot High pitchers combined for a one hitter that saw them strikeout 11 Williston batters, and Kellan Burke hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to lead the Magicians to the 5-0 win. Minot High also showcased the team’s baserunning, early and often as the Magicians stole six bases, including two by both Adam Roedecker and Tyson Ruzicka.

Neither team scored until the top of the fifth inning when Easton Panasuck hit a ground ball that was mishandled by the Williston pitcher, allowing Braden Nelson to score for the Magicians. Minot High added four more runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game away. In addition to Burke’s solo shot, Parker Hann, Ruzicka and Roedecker all scored for the Magicians.

Hann got the win on the mound, throwing two innings of no-hit baseball while striking out three Coyotes’ batters. Deaver got the start for Minot High, striking out five and walking two in two shutout innings.

The second game saw Williston jump out to a 6-0 lead after two innings, behind two runs from Garrett Solberg, and one run each from Kaeden Call, Connor Ekblad and Bridger Johnson.

A six run rally in the third-inning from Minot High tied the game, and the Magicians scored two more in the fourth and three in the fifth to win 11-6 in six innings.

Easton Panasuck, Ruzicka and Jagger Swartwout each scored two runs apiece for Minot High and Burke, Hyrum Maples, Luke Balas and Tegan Schindler all added runs for the Magicians.

Tree Stewart got the win in relief, holding the Coyotes scoreless across two innings of work, that saw him give up just two hits and record one strikeout. Teegen Strand picked up the save, striking out one batter, in an inning of no-hit, shutout pitching.

Minot High moves to 2-0 on the season, and the Magicians will travel to Bismarck Century for a double header this afternoon, with first pitch at 4:30 p.m.
