Despite winter weather, Minot High tennis shines

Kari Gibb/MDN Minot High senior Adison Dittus returns serve against Legacy in doubles play at Cameron Indoor courts.

Temperatures were below 30 degrees, and in single digits with the wind chill on Thursday, April 18, which makes for poor conditions for tennis. Regardless, the Bismarck Legacy Sabers made the trip to Minot where the match with the Minot High Majettes was moved from the Hammond Park outside to the Cameron Park inside.

“I think we had better weather in February,” said Minot High girl’s tennis coach Scott DeLorme of the weather. “We are definitely ready for warmer conditions and outdoor play.”

Despite the outside chill, the inside Cameron, the action was heated as the Majettes took the non-conference meet 5-2 in the 4-3 format of play.

Named the player of the match, Majettes sophomore Kylie Fettig earned the win at the No. 2 singles over Sabers’ senior Halle Severson with 6-1, 6-2 scoring. Minot High senior Sidney Ressler battled Legacy’s senior Aleah McPherson at the No. 1 singles and lost 6-0, 6-3 for the Sabers’ lone singles win.

The toughest match was at the No. 2 doubles. Magettes junior Lila Olson and senior Adison Dittus battled Sabers seniors Maria Barrentt and Brooklyn Sand for three sets. Minot High took the first set 6-4 while the second set went to Legacy 4-6 with several rallies for both sides. In the end, L. Olson and Dittus earned the win with a 6-4 final set.

“This [Legacy match] was always set as a non-conference one,” said DeLorme. “We play a few different non-conference matches, these do not count for standings or rankings. Tuesday and Thursday will both be conference matches.”

Minot High freshman Ava Thuner battled Legacy junior Caylin Kraft at No. 3 singles and won 6-2. 6-2 for the Majettes. Senior Reese Goodman battled junior Prassley Schettler from Legacy and won 6-2, 6-1 for a Minot High win at No. 4 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Magettes senior Sienna Ronning and sophomore Grace Olson beat Sabers seniors Cambrya Kraft and Cassidee Jones, 6-4, 6-2. At No. 3 doubles, Minot High’s eighth graders Braxtyn Bennett and Ella Sherver lost to senior Julia Aadnes and sophomore Ava Flemmer 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 for the one doubles win for Legacy.

The Majettes will host both Bismarck Century, on Tuesday, April 23, and Bismarck High, on Thursday, April 25 at Hammond Park.
