Do you believe in miracles?

The Knights do, with an overtime win of 65-62 in consolation play that sent them on from the consolation game to play for fifth place at the Division B state tournament.

It was the inside game of the Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier (EKM) Rebels versus the outside shooting of Our Redeemer’s Christian School Knights for nearly the entire game. But it was a three point shot at the 29 second mark by Rebel Austin Strobel that put the lead at 56-53 with 15.8 seconds to play. A missed three point shot by the Knights led to them needing a miracle – and they got one. With 2.3 seconds to play, Our Redeemer’s stole the ball and sent a shot from the top of the opposite key by sophomore Gus Engelhard, that hit the iron, bounced above the level of the backboard and dropped for three points and tied the game at 56-56, sending the two teams into overtime.

The Rebels had the edge for nearly the entire game.

The Rebels used their inside game from the first minute of the contest and built a 17-12 point lead and widened that to a 27-24 lead at the half. Of those 27 points, big man inside, Jacob Nitschke had 19 of those points

The Knights held their cool and kept working defensively to fight back each time they drifted back.

Our Redeemer’s had eight players score. Freshmen Wyatt Weekly and Nolan Schmidt each had 15 points while sophomore Payton Lindbo added 14 points and juniors Bryce Vibeto and Andrew Eby each scored six points. The Knights were 22-52 from the field, 12-31 from three point range and 9-12 from the free throw line with 22 rebounds.

EKM had five players score. Senior Jacob Nitschke had 29 points and eight rebounds. Fellow seniors Zeke Barnick added 14 points with six rebounds while Austin Strobel scored 12 points with seven rebounds in the loss. The Rebels were 27-51 from the field, 5-20 from three point range and 3-5 from the free throw line with 35 rebounds.

Outside of having more three point shots and free throws, the Knights trailed in every category but points off the bench with nine compared to zero for the Rebels.

Our Redeemer’s will play Sargent County for fifth place while Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier will play for seventh place against LaMoure-Litchville/Marion.
