Magicians roll over Roughriders in home opener; improve to 3-0

Adam Papin/MDN Minot High’s Logan Conklin dunks in the first half of the Magician’s win over Grand Forks Red River on Tuesday.

This one was never in doubt.

Minot High’s boys basketball team jumped out to a 39-25 half time lead, and never looked back, rolling to a 79-53 win over the Grand Forks Red River, in their home opener.

Logan Conklin had both a two-handed jam and a windmill dunk on his way to scoring 19 points for the Magi. His favorite dunk of the night was when he set up teammate Payton Schell.

“That was sick,” Conklin said.

Nonetheless, the senior forward isn’t satisfied with Minot High moving to 3-0 on the young season.

“We’re doing well so far, but I think there’s also a lot of things we can improve on,” Conklin said. “We were a little sloppy tonight but there’s always room for improvement every night.”

In addition to Conklin’s 19 points, two other Magi reached double figures. Aric Winczewski scored 15, and Schell added 13.

Minot High outscored Grand Forks Red River 40-28 in the second half.

The Roughriders were led by Pearce Parks, who scored a game-high 23 points. Tate Parson also reached double-figures for Red River with 12.

“I played with [Parks] a little bit over the summer, so I got to talk to him a little bit,” Conklin said. “He’s a great kid. He’s a great player. Playing against him was fun, and he’s a competitor who will never give up.”

The win improves Minot High’s season record to 3-0 on the year, and they are currently ranked No. 3 in Division AAA behind only Fargo North and Fargo Davies. Up next, the Magi will go back on the road when they open WDA conference play against the Bismarck St. Mary’s Saints on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 7:45 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
