Knights place second in DLB weekend invite

Robert Brewer/MDN Our Redeemer’s senior Eden Olson (11) keeps her eye on the ball during a home game from earlier this season. In the Des Lacs-Burlington Invitational, Olson registered a team-high 112 assists, as well as 45 digs, 21 kills and eight aces.

On Friday and Saturday, Our Redeemer’s Christian School (25-6, 4-0) took part in the Laker Invitational at Burlington High School.

Finishing up with a tournament record of 5-2, the Knights concluded matters as the runner-up to defending Class B state champion Linton.

In pool play, Our Redeemer’s notched wins in its first three games, defeating Rugby first 25-9, 25-15, then beating Park River 25-14, 25-21. The Knights claimed their third win over Dickinson Trinity 25-8, 25-21 before losing to the aforementioned Linton 16-25, 25-21.

Advancing to the gold bracket of the tournament, Our Redeemer’s got the better of Thompson 25-17, 25-23, and then topped Langdon 25-23, 25-21. In their re-match with Linton in the championship round, Our Redeemer’s came up short by a final tally of 17-25, 13-25.

Individually, senior outside hitter Cheyenne Lang paced the Knights with 40 kills. Four other players, Maya Vibeto, Sydney Popinga Eden Olson and Aubrey Griedl all recorded at least 20 kills apiece. Olson also contributed with a club leading 112 assists in the two-day tournament.

Defensively, Olivia Eble led Our Redeemer’s with 48 total digs. She was followed by Lang (46), Olson (45), Popinga (41) and Vibeto (33). Meanwhile, Griedl recorded a team-high 11 blocks and Callie Weekley had seven blocks of her own.

Afterward, Knights head coach Kara Nunziato expressed her enthusiasm for how well the team performed in a very competitive tournament.

“I think we are right where we want to be as a team because we don’t want to peak too soon,” Nunziato told The Minot Daily News. “We ran into Linton twice, and I thought we made some improvements against them even though the final scores did not go our way. We just have to keep our practices competitive throughout the rest of the year and I’ll feel confident about where we are headed.”

Next up on the schedule, Our Redeemer’s plans to host South Prairie-Max on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
