Bishop Ryan High School three-sport athlete Jaxon Feller is taking his talents to the University of Mary this fall, where he will continue his football career as a running back for the Marauders. Feller, who also plays for the Lions’ varsity basketball and baseball teams once the season on the gridiron has concluded, played most of his games for Bishop Ryan as a running back and an outside linebacker.
As a running back, Feller will bring with him to Mary a resume that boasts 1,809 rushing yards in 203 carries his senior year, accompanied by 24 touchdowns in 12 games. He struck pay dirt multiple times in the same game on six occasions during the Lions’ 9-3 campaign, and rushed for at least 100 yards nine times, thrice reaching the 200-yard mark.
Overall, he earned 4,122 rushing yards on 532 attempts during his high school career, along with 52 touchdowns.
When offered the chance to join the Bismarck-based school, he decided that it would be the best next step not only for his playing career, but for his life after he hangs up the cleats for the final time. He stressed that he plans on attending Mary to satisfy his desire to study radiology, and football comes second. He is fascinated by the prospect of being able to serve others while learning about X-rays and their capabilities.
Mary was not the only school Feller was considering, though, as the University of Minnesota Duluth, Drake University, and the University of Iowa were among his finalists. Ultimately, though, Mary was the best fit for him and his family.
“I went on to visit with Mary, and just the energy they brought and the facility they have were a couple of factors that really set my mind on being a Marauder,” he said.
He will look back on his time with the Lions with fond memories, pointing to his teammates and coaching staff as two of the best parts of his high school career.
“I played with a bunch of awesome guys during my time at Bishop Ryan,” he added. “I’ve been on a bunch of awesome teams and had great coaches. Our coaches help us grow not only as players, but also as people off the field.”
One of the best parts of playing high school football, though, was earning recognition for his hard work. Feller was invited to participate in the Shrine Bowl, where the best players in the state are asked to come and leave it all on the field in an all-star game of sorts.
“The best players in the state from east and west go at each other on different teams and play in a game,” Feller said. “So that was pretty cool to be invited to play in that this summer.”
As his high school career draws to a close and the time for new experiences nears, Feller says cannot wait to take his next step with the Marauders, both on the field and off.
