Magi golf wins first meet of the season at Bismarck High Invite

BISMARCK — After a pair of second-place finishes through the first three meets, the Minot High School boys golf team finally overcame Bismarck Century to win its first meet of the season.

The Magicians topped the Patriots by a single shot, 325 to 326, to win the Bismarck High Invite Saturday afternoon at the Riverwood Golf Course in Bismarck. Mandan slotted into third with a team score of 345.

Individually, Minot’s Gavin Argent found himself in another playoff situation for a second consecutive day. Argent, who won medalist honors at the St. Mary’s Invite on Friday, lost to Century’s Zach Johnson in a two-hole playoff on Saturday. Both golfers shot a round of 74 to force extra holes.

The rest of Minot’s golfers finished in the 80s. Jack Demke (83), Ashton Heilman (83) and Jack Theis (85) rounded out the Magi’s team score, while Otto Langhans (86) and Peyton Bartsch (87) weren’t far behind.

The Mandan Invite is up next on Tuesday at the Prairie West Golf Course.

Majettes tennis falls to

West Fargo Sheyenne, 9-0

BISMARCK – The Minot High School girls tennis team suffered a 9-0 loss to West Fargo Sheyenne on Saturday at the Tom O’Leary Tennis Courts in Bismarck.

“We traveled to Bismarck today to play Sheyenne, and their experience proved to be too much for us today,” MHS head coach Scott DeLorme said. “As a non counter, we can hopefully learn from those missed opportunities and use that to our advantage going forward.”

The Mustangs took control of the dual in singles by winning all six individual matches. Senior Joelle Fettig nearly came out on top in her battle with Sheyenne’s Hailey Raan, but the junior held on for the three-set win (5-7, 6-0, 6-4).

Sophomore Sydney Fettig also went three sets in her loss to Abigail College. After dropping the first set, the Sheyenne senior rallied to claim the next two sets and secure the victory (6-1, 4-6, 6-3).

In doubles, Sydney Fettig and sophomore Morgan Wheeler went three sets with Raan and Miranda Sommerfeld only to see the pair of Mustang players ultimately prevail for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6) win.

Next up for the Majettes is a showdown with Williston on Monday at Hammond Park. The dual is set to begin at 4 p.m.
