MHS tennis advances to championship at West Region Tournament

Ashton Gerard/MDN Minot High School doubles pair Jack Wolsky, left, and Eric Wentz, right, compete against Bismarck High during the West Region Tennis Tournament Thursday at Cameron Indoor Tennis Center.

The cool temperatures and the threat of rain and snow has restricted the West Region Tournament to the Cameron Indoor Tennis Center in Minot. What was intended to be a one-day team tournament has led to a delayed championship game to be played today at 8 a.m.

The Magicians played through Bismarck High (5-0) and Williston (3-2) to earn a spot in the championship match against Bismarck Legacy.

Against Bismarck High, all three singles matches and both doubles matches were won in straight sets.

“We talked about making sure we started strong with an early match and our first couple matches set a nice tone for the match,” Minot High head coach Scott DeLorme said. “After a clean sweep of the singles to start play, the doubles closed it out in straight sets as well for a 5-0 victory.”

Williston provided a tougher challenge for the Magi. Senior Mason Diehl and freshman Zach Diehl won their matches in straight sets.

Rory Taney’s match against Colby Nehring of Williston was taken to three sets. Taney took the first set, 6-1, before Nehring came back in the second set to claim the win, 6-3, and tie up the match. Taney was able to finish, coming up with a 6-1 set and securing Minot’s seat in the championship match.

“(Williston) were strong doubles so we knew we would need our singles players to play well and they were able to do that,” DeLorme said. “All in all, I thought we had a full team effort as even our doubles were competitive despite some top players of Williston being moved into the doubles portion of the match.”

Minot High will face Legacy today at 8 a.m. at Cameron Indoor. Following the championship match will be the individual singles and doubles tournaments.
