It’s been a long time since anyone has beaten the Minot State hockey team at home.

Despite being outshot 51-15, No. 18 Jamestown handed the No. 2 Beavers their first home loss since October of 2014, winning 3-2 Friday at Maysa Arena. The defeat ended a 57-game home winning streak for Minot State.

“We’ve had problems scoring goals against tough teams and it bit us tonight,” MSU coach Wade Regier said. “We outplayed them for vast majority of stretches of that game. We had several chances to put it in and just don’t. This is a nationals type of game, and if we’re going to outshoot somebody in a nationals game, we have to put pucks in or we’ll be on a bus really fast.”

The first eight minutes were spent nearly entirely in the Jimmies’ zone, as MSU had the first 11 shots on goal. On the third shot of the game, MSU’s Johl Swedlo lifted a shot past Jamestown goalie Tallon Kramer to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead.

Jamestown tied the game on a power play opportunity with 1:59 left in the first period, a huge momentum change despite MSU having a 17-4 shot advantage at the time.

The Beavers had a chance to take the lead on a two-on-none advantage early in the second period, but Kramer laid out and made a spectacular glove save to keep it tied. Yet, Kramer couldn’t stop a beautiful feed from Shain Scheschuk to Austin Yano on a four-on-four chance a minute later that put MSU in front 2-1.

Cameron Todd answered for the Jimmies, sneaking a goal past MSU goalie Holden Kurtz with 5:30 left in the second period. MSU had two power play chances in the final four minutes, but couldn’t convert on either. The game remained tied entering the third period despite MSU having a 33-9 shot advantage.

“I’ll never directly call out any of my players, but some of our veterans certainly didn’t play their best games tonight.” Regier said. “Hopefully it’s a rallying cry for us. In the past, we’ve always had a signature loss that we can circle on our calendar where we didn’t lose a game since going forward. But individually, we have to be better going forward. We just didn’t finish off plays tonight.”

In the third period, Eric Buckley fired a one-timer past Kurtz for the Jimmies’ first lead of the of the game with 16:20 left in the game.

MSU had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds on a mad scramble, but Jamestown held on to seal the win and break the Beavers’ 57-game home winning streak.

“It’s amazing. It’s our seniors’ first loss on home ice,” Regier said. “It’s an interesting dynamic. It’s always been a tough place to play and we had probably one of the record crowds at the Maysa Friday, so it’s tough when you put those things in perspective. But as anyone knows with us, it’s championship or bust. So as long as we take care of business in the second half, we’ll be OK.”

Kurtz had 12 saves on 15 chances, while Kramer stopped 49 shots on 51 opportunities.

MSU (15-2-1) is back in action at 7 p.m. tonight against Jamestown on the road.
