Protect children from toxic ‘weeds’ near school

Travis Johnson, Minot

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding a significant safety issue that is putting our children’s health at risk. The presence of toxic “weeds,” particularly common Tansy, near Ramstad Middle School has become a major cause for alarm. Despite the obvious dangers posed by these plants, it is disheartening to witness the inaction of certain county commissioners, who also hold school board positions, refusing to address this critical matter.

The common Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) is an invasive and noxious plant known for its toxic properties. This highly dangerous plant contains compounds like pyrethrins and thujone, which can cause adverse health effects when exposed to humans, especially young children. As our Middle School students regularly walk past these infested areas and come into contact with these toxic “weeds,” their health and well-being are at serious risk.

The potential health consequences of exposure to common Tansy cannot be underestimated. Side effects range from skin irritations to respiratory problems and, in severe cases, even neurological issues. Considering the vulnerability of young children, we must prioritize their safety and well-being above all else.

It is the responsibility of county commissioners to ensure the safety of our community, especially our school-going children. It is truly disheartening to witness the refusal of certain county commissioners, who also happen to hold influential positions within the school board, to take necessary action in this regard. Their inaction raises questions about their commitment to the well-being of our children and their ability to fulfill their public duties effectively.

On 7/21/2023 I sent an email giving a county commissioner two weeks to start a plan (all they had to do was start a plan and notify me) to take care of this issue (obviously because school is starting soon). Since then I have received nothing outside of a text message saying guidance may be needed from the states attorney’s office just minutes after the email was sent.

This is not a new problem. I have been after Ward County for 6+ years to take care of this. It is the county’s problem because the private land that these toxic “weeds” inhabit are not in city limits even though every piece of property surrounding it is. I’d also like to point out that these toxic “weeds” inhibit my ability to use my own land to grow a garden or let my kids play in the backyard. Along with the toxic “weeds” there are noxious weeds, barbed wire and hazardous trash that are required to be taken care of, yet they do nothing but “text” the owner.

I urge our community to come together and demand that immediate action be taken to address this grave issue. We must insist that the toxic “weeds” near Ramstad Middle School are eradicated or safely removed without delay. Additionally, any county commissioners with knowledge of this issue should be held criminally accountable if anyone is hurt by these toxic “weeds” for neglecting to take care of the problem.

Let us not wait for unfortunate incidents to occur before realizing the urgency of this matter. The health and safety of our children should always be our top priority. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that Ramstad Middle School and its surroundings become a safer environment for learning and growth.
