Shirley Brevig

Shirley Ann Brevig, 81, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at Hospice House, in Rapid City, SD.

Shirley was born on October 24, 1941, to Helen and Leo Kassner in Minot, North Dakota. Shirley graduated from Sawyer High School in Sawyer North Dakota, where she met and married Arlo Brevig. They were united in marriage on April 29th, 1960. They had two daughters, Debra and Sandra.

Living in Minot, Shirley worked various office positions at Trinity Hospital, Saint Joseph Hospital and US Bank formally known as Union National. Arlo worked at Nash Finch which moved them around the Midwest, in which Shirley started working in the banking industry at Northgate National in Hutchinson, KS and Scottsbluff National in Scottsbluff, NE.

Arlo passed away April of 1976 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Shirley then moved back to Minot, North Dakota to be closer to family to help raise her two girls. In October of 1976, she took a position as a teller with Frist National Bank in Minot, and with her experience, she moved to teller supervisor, working through the ranks of the operational departments to become Operational Manager, then to Assistant Vice President of Norwest Bank. She retired in 2003, as Vice President of Wells Fargo Bank. Her career was a big accomplishment for women back then.

While in Minot, Shirley was a member of various organizations, Souris Valley United Way, Salvation Army, and the Lions Club. She was on various committees with American Businesswoman Association and with St Mark’s Lutheran Church. When Shirley moved to Rapid City, she became a member of Peace Lutheran Church where she was involved with many of the church’s committees. Shirley was a member of the Quilters, held several positions with LWML, and was on the Evangelist committee. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels for over 10 years. She was very much involved in her church, community organizations and volunteered several hours which spanned over 50 years.

Family was especially important to Shirley, so when both her daughters were living in Rapid City, South Dakota, she made sure she came down to visit every 6 to 8 weeks. She was not going to miss her grandchildren grow up and they were going to know their Grandma Shirley. When Shirley retired from Wells Fargo, she moved down to Rapid City in 2004 to be closer to her girls and her grandchildren. She would help her daughters with taking the kids to practices, tournaments, whatever they needed, and she never missed a game, nor a tournament. She was their biggest cheerleader and inspiration, always there for her daughters and her grandchildren.

Shirley loved spending time with her daughters, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends over the years. Genuinely enjoyed gathering with all her family and friends. She was a strong, courageous,and independent woman. She had a solid foundation which was built on faith, love, and believing in her Lord. She was the rock and the foundation of her family, and she will be deeply missed.

Shirley is survived and grateful for sharing her life with her daughters, Debra Johnson (Ricky Johnson) and Sandra Svenson, both of Rapid City, SD. Her two sisters, Arlene Buechler, and Ardella Score (Melvin Score), both of Minot, North Dakota. Grandchildren, Andrea Cimburek (Zack Cimburek), Megan Sterling (Nick Sterling), Renn Svenson and Justus Svenson (Charlea Svenson), 6 Great-grandchildren, and Brother-in-law, Clayton Brevig (Judy Brevig), several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlo Brevig, daughter, Brenda K Brevig, and mother and father, Helen and Leo Kassner, mother and father-in-law, Erna and Harry Brevig and four brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.

Visitation: Friday, December 2, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.

Graveside Service: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2022, at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials, in Shirley’s honor, to Meals on Wheels, and Hospice House, both of Rapid City, SD.

Funeral services were held at 11am on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at Peace Lutheran Church in Rapid City. Visitation was held from 4pm – 6pm on Monday, November 28, 2022 at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City.
