Arthur Walter Pfeifer

Arthur Walter Pfeifer,
the son of Frank and Mag-
dalena (Gerein) Pfeifer
was born July 30, 1928 in
Rugby, North Dakota. He
died at the age of 91 years
on Saturday, April 18,
2020 at the Heart of Amer-
ica Care Center in Rugby.
Art was raised in the
rural farm home of his
parents in Tuscarora
Township, Pierce County
and attended Brazil Coun-
try School # 4 and com-
pleted his education, gra-
duating from Balta High
School. Following gra-
duation, he left the family
farm for Chicago, Illinois
where he worked for the
Chicago Publishing Com-
pany. He would later re-
turn to help on the family
farm. In 1952, he was in-
ducted into the U.S. Army
and served in the Korean
War until his honorable
discharge in 1954. Fol-
lowing service, he again
returned to the farm. On
October 17, 1955 he was
united in marriage to Ar-
lene Thomas at St.
Cecilia’s Catholic Church
in Towner. The couple
made their home with his
parents until they pur-
chased a farm of their
own in the Pleasant Lake,
Benson County area.
Here they farmed and
raised their family. Ar-
lene died January 26,
1971. Art, with the help
of family continued to
raise his young family and
retired into Rugby in 1985
after 32 years of farming.
He was passionate about
farming, especially grain
farming and spent long
days in the hayfield on
his Minneapolis-Moline U
tractor.
Art was a firm but gen-
tle and quiet man and was
a longtime member of St.
Mary’s Catholic Church in
Knox, a current member
of Little Flower Catholic
Church, Rugby, was a life-
time member of the
Knights of Columbus and
enjoyed memberships in
the Germans from Russia,
the Veterans of Foreign
Wars, the American Le-
gion and the Eagles. He
was an avid fisherman
and was able to make a
trip to the origin of his
family’s home country of
Odessa, Russia.
He is survived by his
children, Blaine of
Pleasant Lake, Carl of
Hamilton, Montana,
Elaine (Cordell) Myran of
Dickinson, Gwen Pfeifer
of Minot and Holly Pfeifer
of Fargo; 10 Grandchil-
dren; 7
Great-grandchildren;
sister-in-law, Janice
Pfeifer of Rugby;
numerous nieces,
nephews, other relatives
and friends. He was pre-
ceded in death by his
wife, Arlene; two sons,
Francis and Donald; three
brothers, Anton “Tony”,
Roy and Francis; two sis-
ters, Catherine Pfeifer and
Regardia Schaan; special
friend, Edna Boardman;
and his parents.
A private Mass of
Christian Burial for his
family by invitation only
will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Thursday at the Little
Flower Catholic Church
in Rugby, Father Neil
Pfeifer, Celebrant. Burial
with full military honors
for family and the public
will be held in the church
cemetery in the late
spring, along with a Cele-
bration of Life Memorial
Mass of Christian Burial
in the church.
Visitation for the public
will be held from 3:30 un-
til 5 p.m. Wednesday (To-
day) in the Anderson Fun-
eral Home of Rugby.
