May Saastad

May Saastad, 95, Minot,

ND, formerly of Sawyer,

ND, passed away Wednes-

day, October 16, 2019, in

a Minot hospital.

May Elinor Huizenga

was born February 8,

1924, the fourth of nine

children, to Arthur and

Sarah Huizenga, in Water-

ford Township, Ward

County, rural Burlington,

ND. She graduated from

grade school at rural

school #3, then began

taking high school

correspondence classes

and received her diploma

from the Department of

Correspondence of Fargo,

ND, in 1940. When she

was young, May played in

the family band during

many area dances.

After graduation, May

moved to Everett, WA,

and worked as a welder

for Pacific Ship Building

Company, then at Wey-

erhauser Paper and Pulp

Mill. Later, she moved to

Wenatchee, WA, to work

as a fruit picker and at

Cedargreens. Next, May

moved to Elizabeth City,

NC, where she worked as

a waitress. She also

played in a local band at

the WCNC radio station.

Finally, May returned to

the Minot area to play in

both the family band and

in various local bands.

May married Norman

Saastad on December 3,

1955 in Chicago, IL. They

made their home on a

farm in the Sawyer area

where she would help

with the farm work. This

union produced two chil-

dren, Martia and Daryl.

May retired from farming

in 1996 and moved to

Minot in 1997, where she

has resided ever since.

May loved having a

large garden and planting

lots of flowers. She re-

ceived many ribbons over

the years at the North

Dakota State Fair for her

fresh vegetables, fruits,

canned goods and baked

goods. In addition, she

loved sewing, crocheting

and knitting.

Her loving family in-

cludes: son, Daryl (Lynn)

Saastad, Cincinnati, OH;

grandchildren, Dawn

Saastad, Minot, Dustin

(Laura) Saastad, Clifford,

ND, Erica (Trey)

Tessmann, Mayville, ND,

Dessa Denich, Devils

Lake, ND, and Melissa

Haag, Minneapolis, MN;

great-grandchildren,

Dylan, Triston, Dayna,

Braeden, Keaton, Landon,

Maylea, Fisher, Charlea,

Alexa and Denlin; broth-

er, Harry Huizenga, Gol-

den, CO; sister, Helen

Mork, Minot, ND; and

numerous nieces and

nephews.

May was preceded in

death by: her parents;

husband, Norman;

daughter, Martia Denich;

sisters, Audrey Huizenga

and Alice (Harry) Cramer;

and brothers, Orrie (Gla-

dys), Robert (Ardis), Ed-

ward (Shirley), and LeRoy

Huizenga.

Funeral: Monday, Oc-

tober 21, 2019, at 10:30

a.m. at Thompson-Larson

Funeral Home Chapel,

Minot.

Interment: Rosehill

Memorial Park, Minot,

ND.

Visitation: Sunday from

noon to 2:00 p.m. at

Thompson-Larson Fun-

eral Home, Minot.
