Ruth Kastner

Ruth Kastner, 93, Minot, died Friday, October 10, 2014, in a Minot nursing home.

Ruth was born November 14, 1921, in Butte, ND, to John and Christine (Kowasch) Sandhofner. She grew up and was educated in Dogden Township of McLean County, near Ruso.

Ruth was once married to George Nechiporenko.

Ruth was united in marriage to Elmer Kastner on October 24, 1977, in Minot, ND, where they made their home. She was employed throughout the years as a housekeeper for many families in the Minot area and also held a part-time position at General Trading Company until 2004.

In addition to spending winters in Mesa, AZ, since 2001, Ruth and Elmer enjoyed attending polka fests around ND and MN and winning many dance trophies.

Elmer passed away December 20, 2009.

She was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church and the Moose Lodge, both of Minot. She will be missed by all who shared in her life.

Ruth is survived by her children, Shirley Griffitt, Minot, Linda Hovde and Darlene Hurtovenko, all of Minot, ND; 5 grandchildren, Terry (Kathy) Hovde, Ryder, Shannon Jensen (Chris), Minneapolis, MN, Danya Potts, Grand Junction, CO, Roxanne Jacobson, Bismarck and Quinn (Kandice) Hurtovenko, Minot; seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandsons; step children, Colleen (Kelly) Bertsch, Virginia Gross, and Allen Kastner; three step grandchildren and one step great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sons-in-law, Joe Hurtovenko and Gary Hovde, all of her brothers and sisters including: sisters, Sadie Reiter, Elsie Jacobson and Agatha Sandhofner, and brothers, Bennie, Alfred, William, Edwin, Valerious, Emmett, Clem and Raymond Sandhofner.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.

Interment: North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan, ND, at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2014.

Visitation: Tuesday, October 14, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
