Lakers sweep Miners, secure No. 2 seed for region tourney

In a tale of two very different games, the outcome was the same as Des Lacs-Burlington won 19-4 and 1-0 over the visiting Stanley Blue Jays. The second game ran only three innings since the doubleheader was a makeup meeting due to weather on Tuesday, May 7, and with future games looming, the Blue Jays requested only three innings to save pitch counts for their team.

The scoring in game one jumped right out of the gate in the first inning for the home team. In the bottom of the first, Braylon Fisher set the tone with a solo home run on the first pitch of the game. The third batter, senior Paxton Ystaas was walked and Ty Hughes took his third pitch for a fence clearing shot to center field, making the score 3-0 with one out.

Two batters and two outs later, Ryan Ralph hit a double, Drew Roedocker was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second and the bases were loaded when Kyler Fisher was walked. With runners on each base, Easton Andersen was walked to make the score 4-0 with two out. The next batter, Fisher, reached on a dropped third strike and two runners scored on errors on the play.

After the runners advanced on a pick-off attempt, Collin Abernathey singled to score a run and make the lead 8-0 going into the top of the second inning. The Lakers scored four more runs in the bottom of the second and one more in the bottom of the third to build a 13-0 lead going into the top of the fourth inning.

“We hit fine,” said Lakers head baseball coach BJ Karhoff. “But they also struggled from the mound at times. So it [offensive output] was a little of both.”

Stanley mounted an offensive effort in the top of the fourth inning when W Nelson reached on a single, Caysn Bieri was walked and Benjamin Hynek loaded the bases with his own single to left field. Blue Jays James Rierros Fonseca was hit by a pitch to bring in a score. Riley Olson reached on an error and scored a run. Colter Eberle-LeRohl was walked to bring in another score.

After a pitching change, Carter Jenkins hit a sacrifice fly for Stanley and scored the fourth run of the inning, making the lead 13-4 at the bottom of the fourth inning. Three errors put Aberbathey, Ystaas and Hughes in play and scored Abernathey. Two outs later and Roedocker was walked to load the bases again. Fisher was walked to score and Andersen was walked to make the score 17-4 with two outs and the bases loaded. Robert Tuttle singled to end the offensive efforts for the first game.

The second game was a pitching duel between Lakers freshman Will Marquart and Miners Bieri and Eberle-LeRohl for three innings.

In the bottom of the third, and final inning of play, Andersen doubled and Feller was walked to put runners on first and third base after Andersen stole a base on a passed ball. AJ Kilbourn was walked to load the bases. Tuttle was then hit by a pitch and Andersen scored the lone run to win the game in walk off fashion.

The Lakers’ Marquart edged the others with a no hit, no run effort for three innings and walked one batter and struck out six for the game. Bieri allowed one hit, no runs in two innings and walked one batter and struck out three in the effort. Eberle-LaRoh allowed one run on one hit and walked two batters in one inning of relief .

“We are feeling fairly confident about things,” said Karhoff. “One more non-region game on Monday; we will be the two seed in the region tournament that will be played in Lansford this year. Renville is the one-seed as well.”

Des Lacs-Burlington will host Minot North JV on Monday, May 13, for a doubleheader.
