Mabel Hoff

Mabel Hoff, 99, longtime Williston resident, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, surrounded by her loving family, in her room at Bethel Lutheran Home where she had been a resident since May 2008.

Mabel Pauline (Lovro) Hoff was born Feb. 22, 1913, at Astoria in Deuel County, S.D. The daughter of Hans and Oline (Haseth) Lovro, she was baptized in Singsaas Lutheran Church near Hendricks, Minn. She was confirmed in Scandia Lutheran Church at West Bonetrail on Oct. 16, 1927.

When she was about 5 years old, she moved with her family to West Bonetrail, near Williston, in Williams County. There she attended and graduated from eighth grade at Hagboe School. She worked for two families in Williston and in the hospital in Grenora.

She married Kolbjorn Hoff on Dec. 23, 1933, in Williston. They made their home on their farm near Bonetrail, in Strandahl Township. She worked alongside her husband as they farmed. In 1959, they retired and moved into Williston. They sold their farm to his nephews: Edward, Haral and Ivan. They celebrated 44 years of marriage before Kolbjorn passed away on Feb. 11, 1977.

In Williston, Mabel belonged to Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church where she was active in the quilting circle and Women of Life. She sewed many quilt tops even continuing after being admitted to Bethel Home. Mabel especially enjoyed working in her yard, gardening, canning and baking. Her coffee pot was on for company and she always had cookies for the neighborhood kids.

After her husband passed away she made two trips to Norway with her brother and sisters and was host to the Norwegian relatives when they came here. She traveled to Canada, Colorado, Florida, Washington, D.C., and the New England coast. She entered Bethel Lutheran Home in May 2008. She especially enjoyed the staff, residents and the activities like winning at bingo. She grew to love the birds at Bethel, caring for the three in Legacy and spending many hours with her special bird.

Mabel was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; her brother, Justin Lovro; sisters, Helga Cross and Alpha Hills.

She is survived by: her sister, Olga (Ingvald) Odland, of Velva; and several nephews and nieces, including Linda Haugen and her husband, Loren, of Williston, to whom she was a second mother and to their children to whom she was a special grandma.
