Minot Symphony Orchestra announces auditions

The Minot Symphony Orchestra invites musicians to audition for its 2026–2027 season on Saturday, Aug. 22. Auditions are open to skilled musicians who perform on string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Experienced high school students, college students, community musicians, music educators and military personnel are all encouraged to audition. Musicians must complete the Audition Request Form on the Minot Symphony Orchestra website to be placed on the audition schedule and receive audition requirements. Nurturing Families series to begin Sept. 8

The North Central Parent & Family Resource Center is offering a Nurturing Families Program in Minot. The 16-week course begins Sept. 8 and runs Tuesday evenings through Dec. 22. The course is designed to increase parenting skills and promote healthy family life. Classes provide information and practical experience on topics such as communication, establishing routines, positive discipline and self-nurturing. Record numbers in ND seek food assistance

Great Plains Food Bank announced a record 186,366 neighbors in North Dakota and Clay County, Minnesota, sought food assistance during the latest fiscal year. During the year, one in four people in the region relied on Great Plains Food Bank and its network of food pantries and programs for support, a 16% increase from the previous year, according to the food bank. MHA Nation bans kratom on reservation

NEW TOWN — The Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation (MHA Nation) Tribal Business Council has announced an immediate ban on the sale and distribution of kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) and its derivatives on the Fort Berthold Reservation. The ban goes into effect Aug. 12. July temp above long-term average

The past month of July had an average temperature of 73.4 degrees which is 4.8 degrees above the 119-year, long-term average of 68.6 degrees, according to Austin Kraklau of the North Central Research Extension Center, south of Minot. Minot transit hosts free rides, adds extra routes

Minot City Transit is hosting its annual free ride week from Aug. 10-14. “Free ride week takes some of the pressure away from trying something new,” Minot City Transit superintendent Brian Horinka said. “Try our bus system as a group, make mistakes and ask our drivers questions. See if the bus can be a City of Minot travel solution for you and your household.” Two extra routes will be offered beginning on Aug. 19 during the high-volume ridership times in the weekday 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. hour blocks.
