National Trails Day activities set in ND
The Dakota Prairie Grasslands will host multiple events on June 6 in celebration of National Trails Day, in partnership with the American Hiking Society.
The North Country Trail Association’s Dakota Prairie Chapter will host a National Trails Day Hike to Pigeon Point in the Sheyenne National Grasslands. Hikers will meet at 9:45 a.m. at the Middle Trailhead in the Sheyenne National Grasslands, located at 6471 147th Ave. SE, Sheldon, for a three-hour trek. Visit the chapter’s website for registration details.
Members of the public are invited to volunteer and join the Forest Service staff to help improve and maintain trails near the Buffalo Gap Campground in the Little Missouri National Grassland. Planned projects include installing a new trailhead identification sign at the Crying Butte Trailhead and constructing a 16-foot-long, 6-foot-wide bridge over a nearby seasonal creek.
Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at the Group Picnic Area near the entrance to Buffalo Gap Campground. Participants will then drive personal vehicles to the designated work sites. Additional event details are available from the Forest Service.
Established by the American Hiking Society in 1993, National Trails Day is held annually on the first Saturday in June. The celebration brings together federal land managers, partners, and volunteers to honor and improve trails, helping ensure they remain safe, well-maintained, easy to follow, and accessible for all.
