A Sheridan County resident lost his home and others in the area saw significant damage following tornadoes that ripped through central North Dakota Sunday. No injuries were identified.

The National Weather Service reported it received 19 reports of tornadoes, which it was investigating Monday, Sept. 15.

“Afer an event like this some of the reports end up being from the same tornado, but we did have 19 tornadoes reported,” said NWS meteorologist Megan Jones, Bismarck. “Hopefully, over the next couple of days, we will have more official information we will be publishing.”

One tornado in Sheridan County was rated EF-2 based on damage, the NWS stated.

Kevin Vietz of Denhoff was not at home when his mobile home was hit by a tornado, which tore off part of the roof and did extensive damage inside the home.

The Goodrich Rural Fire Department reported the tornado crossed from the Burleigh County line and dropped onto the open prairie before making its path to Vietz’s house, which was a total loss. The community has reached out with assistance to Vietz, a rural firefighter with the Goodrich Department.

Sheridan County Emergency Manager Delbert Hoffmann said Veitz indicated he has clothing, food and places to stay. The American Red Cross has extended aid, and a GoFundMe account and fund at Bravera Bank in McClusky have been established.

Sheridan County Sheriff Trent Naser said another mobile home, used as a part-time residence, was destroyed, as was a pole barn. The NWS was still investigating so it was unknown whether the same tornado did the damage or if multiple tornadoes were involved. The two mobile homes and barn were on a straight course extending about 10 miles.

The 30X60-foot pole barn was reported to be empty when the damage occurred. Hoffmann said another pole barn, north of Denhoff, was reported to have lost its metal roof. In addition, a number of trees throughout the area were damaged, leaving residents with extensive cleanup in some instances.

The NWS also received reports of damage to a pole barn near the city of Mercer in McLean County, where it rated the tornado west of Mercer as an EF-1, and a barn in Emmons County.

The storm moved from the South Dakota line into Burleigh County and east to the Wing and Tuttle areas before heading north into Sheridan, McLean and McHenry counties, according to the weather service.

One tornado came down a mile south of Granville, but the NWS and McHenry County Sheriff’s Department indicated no damages were reported.

Funnels clouds spotted near Minot

The National Weather Service reported funnel clouds were spotted by law enforcement and the public near Surrey and Minot Air Force Base late in the afternoon on Monday, Sept. 15. The NWS stated these types of funnel clouds are formed by unique meteorology conditions and are usually short lived. However, they can and occasionally do touch the ground and cause minor damage so should be taken seriously.
