Summer Sibshops offer support for siblings
Parents of children with special needs often wonder how to best support the other children in the family – those who help out, stay flexible and sometimes get less attention. This summer, Prairie Grit Adaptive Sports is offering a program just for those siblings.
Summer Sibshops with Prairie Grit are part support group, part party. Designed for children ages 7-13 who have a sibling with a disability, diagnosis or developmental delay, these sessions give children a chance to share, connect and have fun with others who understand their experiences.
“We see it again and again – siblings who leave Sibshop feeling empowered and connected, and parents who feel a little lighter knowing someone is pouring into their other children too,” Krystal Burgereit, executive director of Prairie Grit, said in a news release. “We have so many different situations with these families but one goal – to help the entire family feel supported.”
Each Sibshop blends games, guided discussion and peer connection led by trained facilitators in a playful, pressure-free setting. It’s a space where children can relax, relate and recharge.
Session dates are Tuesdays, June 3, July 1 and Aug. 5, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Minot Family YMCA. A pizza dinner will be provided. Registration is free and space is limited. Contract Prairie Grit Adaptive Sports to register.
