Sentenced for burglary and criminal mischief

A Minot man has been sentenced to time served and probation in two separate cases after pleading guilty to charges of burglary and damaging a Ward County Jail sprinkler system.

Christopher Dion Davis, 33, Minot, entered his change of plea in both cases in North Central District Court on Tuesday, pleading guilty to one count of burglary and criminal mischief, both Class C felonies. One count of refusal to halt, a Class B misdemeanor, was dismissed in accordance with a plea agreement.

According to court documents, Davis was arrested on March 17, 2024, for breaking into a downtown Minot business by breaking a window and damaging a display. Davis fled on foot after being confronted by an employee, and was detained by Minot Police after a brief foot chase. Davis was then booked at the Ward County Jail.

On April 24, 2025, Davis was charged after damaging the sprinkler system inside his cell. According to court documents, Ward County Jail correctional staff reported the incident to the Ward County Sheriff’s Department. The reporting correctional officer observed water emanating from underneath Davis’ cell door and ultimately flooded two adjacent cells with stagnant foul smelling water. It was ultimately determined that Davis had activated the system by hitting it repeatedly until it set off the alarm. The cost of replacing the system was determined to be $2,200, according to the jail’s maintenance staff.

Judge Richard Hagar sentenced Davis to a concurrent five years with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on both counts, to first serve 58 days and 20 days respectively. Davis was credited 58 days and 20 days already served in both cases, and ordered to complete three years of supervised probation.

Davis was assessed $4,382.54 in restitution, and $650 in court fines and fees.

Starting at $2.99/week.
