Dog’s best friend

Jill Schramm/MDN Army Staff Sgt. Sally Dolenc, and Minot Police Sgt. Taylor Jensen with Caspian appear before the Minot City Council Monday as Dolenc was recognized for her donated time as a vet tech in providing medical training to K-9 handlers. Specifically, Dolenc was recognized for her actions on Aug. 14, following an incident in which Caspian was injured while assisting Ward County in a search for a suspect. The search took Caspian and Jensen under a rail car and over two six-foot fences. Because Caspian was showing signs of physical injury to his right back leg, Jensen contacted Dolenc at 11:30 p.m. Dolenc had the K-9 immediately brought in for attention. Discovering chemical burns to the dog’s paws, Dolenc quickly sanitized Caspian to neutralize the unknown chemical. Treatment delay could have resulted in the chemical entering Caspian’s blood, causing serious injury or death. Mayor Tom Ross presented Dolenc with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the city and police department.
