Defendant sentenced to 15 years

Scott Flood

A Minot man who entered a change of plea to guilty on charges of attempted murder and burglary has been sentenced to serve 15 years in prison.

Scott Andrew Flood, 34, Minot, appeared in North Central District Court on Oct. 4 before Judge Douglas Mattson for sentencing. Flood’s guilty pleas for the counts of attempted murder, a Class A felony, and burglary, a Class B felony, came through a plea agreement with Ward County prosecutors, which also dismissed two Class C felony counts for domestic violence-serious bodily injury and interference with telephone during emergency call-intentional.

The charges against Flood stemmed from an incident in November 2023, when Flood entered the victim’s home and strangled her.

According to court documents, the victim, who identified Flood as her attacker, was pregnant at the time. The attempted murder charge was added in December 2023 after a review of the case by Ward County State’s Attorney Roza Larson.

Mattson sentenced Flood to serve 15 years with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for the murder count, with credit for 174 days already served. Flood was on probation at the time of the November incident for a separate 2019 conviction of aggravated assault, and the 15 years are to be served consecutively with a sentence of four years and 149 days in that case. Flood was given a suspended sentence of 10 years for the burglary count to be served consecutively with the first count, along with three years of supervised probation.

Flood was ordered to have no contact with the victim and to maintain a 100-foot distance provision from her, her residence and place of employment. Restitution in the case was reserved pending a later hearing, and Flood was assessed $675 in court fines and fees.
