Double-D Haw is back to fight breast cancer

Jill Schramm/MDN The Blue Rider of Minot is covered with bras as it prepares to host Double-D Haw, an annual fundraiser in the fight against breast cancer.

Double-D Haw, billed as Minot’s biggest and best breast cancer fundraiser, will hold this year’s event Saturday, Sept. 21, from 5-11 p.m. at The Blue Rider. All proceeds will once again go to a local cancer fund to help patients and survivors in their fight against breast cancer, according to a news release.

Double D-Haw 2023 raised $15,000.

“We want to double our donation,” said Executive Director ShaunAnne Tangney in the release. “Raising $30,000 in only our third year is a big goal, but we believe we can do it.”

All the money raised at Double D-Haw will help fund the purchase of a Brevera Breast Biopsy System for the local hospital, she said. Because this is a big-ticket item, it may take more than a year to raise enough funds, but it is important to breast cancer patients because it enables faster and more accurate sample collection, provides real-time biopsy results and reduces discomfort and anxiety for needle biopsy patients, she said.

As in the past, Double-D Haw will be a lively night of food, Double-D inspired fine art auction and live music. An authentic seafood boil is planned.

“We wanted to do something different than other fundraisers,” Tangney said. “You don’t see a seafood boil very often in North Dakota, and Ryan Ackerman of Ackerman-Estvold Engineering does an amazing job with the boil. It’s fun to watch and the seafood is off-the-charts good.”

First Avenue in front of The Blue Rider will be closed for an old-fashioned street dance with music by Wild Hands.

A silent auction will feature art by many local artists. Items will include paintings, prints, jewelry, clothing, sculptural works, photo sessions and coffee classes and more. Artist Walter Piehl also has donated an original painting to the auction.

As always, the Double D-Haw crew has turned the entire Blue Rider into a work of street art, covered top to bottom in bras.

Tickets are available in advance at The Blue Rider and at the door.

Starting at $2.99/week.
