Former police officer alleges discrimination

SURREY – A former police officer for the City of Surrey has filed a discrimination complaint under the North Dakota Human Rights Act, alleging a hostile working environment.

Anthony Hill, who was employed by the Surrey Police Department from June 2021 to November 2023, filed the complaint June 3 with the North Dakota Department of Labor and Human Rights. The complaint alleges racial discrimination and sexual harassment by another employee and violation by the city of its grievance policies.

Documents indicate Hill had been placed on administrative leave Nov. 3 while his job performance was investigated. He stated he resigned Nov. 22 under duress.

The Surrey City Council filed a response July 24 to decline participation in a voluntary process for resolving the complaint. The council also has declined public comment.
