Minot, area airports receive state grants
Minot International Airport was awarded $528,477 in state airport grants for maintenance and improvements, according to the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission.
The money will be used toward crack sealing, runway markings, taxiway rehabilitation, electrical vault rehabilitation, wildlife hazard removal, replacing the commercial terminal fire panel, exit land improvements, purchase of a mower unit and operations vehicle, replacing fuel farm pumps and fuel farm separator and environmental review on a public hangar demolition. The projects in total are estimated at just over $9 million.
The Aeronautics Commission approved $16 million in state infrastructure grant allocations to multiple public airports throughout North Dakota. Of those funds, $7.7 million is being provided to assist with maintenance and improvements at the commercial service airports and $8.3 million is provided for general aviation airport projects. There were 190 individual projects approved for funding at 65 public-use airports throughout the state.
These state grant allocations also match and leverage federal grant dollars through the Airport Infrastructure Program, Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, and Airport Terminal Program. It is estimated that throughout the 2024 construction cycle, North Dakota airport projects will receive about $70 million dollars through different federal funding sources which all require matching participation.
The state’s Airport Infrastructure Fund, established as part of the Operation Prairie Dog bill in the 2019 legislative session, is providing $10 million of the total state grant allocation. The other $6 million allocation was made possible from the Aeronautics Commission’s Special Fund. The primary revenue source for the fund is derived from state tax collections on aviation fuel and aircraft sales.
