Harmony Amongst Nature: A journey through the International Peace Garden

Submitted Photos International Peace Garden offers a variety of gardens and activities to enjoy.

In the heart of the plains, where the horizon stretches as far as the eye can see, lies a sanctuary of tranquility and beauty — the International Peace Garden. On the border between North Dakota and Manitoba, this haven beckons visitors from all walks of life to experience its wonders and immerse themselves in the harmonious balance of nature.

The International Peace Garden was founded in 1932 to celebrate the longstanding peace and friendship between the United States of America and Canada. Built near the geographic center of North America along the longest undefended international border in the world, the Garden is nestled in the beautiful Turtle Mountains and includes both Canadian and U.S. territory.

At nearly 2,400 acres, the Garden is one of the continent’s most symbolic and scenic attractions — a place to celebrate, promote, and experience peace. At its heart are the magnificent Formal Gardens, featuring more than 80,000 flowering annuals and perennials in displays tucked into terraces and along walkways with a stunning Sunken Garden and an 18-foot floral clock. The calming sounds of nature can be heard throughout along with the lovely chimes from a Carillon Bell Tower that ring every quarter hour. The breathtaking displays of blooms change each year; the only two that remain constant are the floral representations of the American and Canadian flags. As peak bloom hits in the latter half of July, visitors will be amazed by our floral designs of this year’s children’s reading theme.

As the sun rises over the vast expanse of greenery, casting a golden hue upon the landscape, the International Peace Garden awakens to greet its guests. Among its many attractions stands the newly expanded Conservatory, a marvel of architectural splendor and botanical diversity. Within its walls, visitors embark on a journey through one of the world’s most diverse collections of more than 4,000 cacti and succulents, each specimen a testament to nature’s ingenuity and resilience. This collection was gifted to the Peace Garden in 2009 by Don Vitko of Minot.

Step inside and be transported to arid landscapes adorned with vibrant blooms and intricate patterns, where prickly giants stand tall alongside delicate succulents, creating a tapestry of colors and textures that mesmerizes the senses. From the towering saguaros of the Sonoran Desert to the whimsical shapes of lithops from the African deserts, the Conservatory is a treasure trove of botanical wonders waiting to be discovered.

But the International Peace Garden offers more than just a feast for the eyes. For the young and young at heart, the Children’s Nature Play Area beckons with its whimsical charm and endless opportunities for exploration. Here, little adventurers can climb, crawl, and discover the wonders of nature firsthand, fostering a deep connection with the world around them. Distinct animal habitat play zones nestled into an existing forest grove will encourage fun and imaginative play while teaching about the animals, plants, history and indigenous culture of the Turtle Mountains through a storytelling approach. Components will include climbing nets in the turtle area; bridges, dams and lodges in the beaver zone; and a wolf-themed gathering circle with a fire ring at its center.

After a morning of discovery, guests can unwind at the Garden’s Cafe, where the aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the scent of blooming flowers. For the active at heart, the changing of seasons and scenery in the Garden allows for changes in recreational activities throughout the year. From biking, hiking, kayak rentals and camping in the summer, to cross-country skiing and cabin rentals in the winter. The Garden is open year-round for you to stay and explore. Take a break and bring your own picnic to one of the many shelters across the Peace Garden.

Before departing, be sure to visit the Garden’s Gift Shop, where souvenirs and mementos await to commemorate your journey through the International Peace Garden. From handcrafted jewelry inspired by nature’s beauty to artisanal goods crafted by local artisans, each item tells a story and carries the spirit of the Garden within its folds. The Garden is planning to unveil a craft beer developed by Laughing Sun Brewing in Bismarck. Visitors will be able to enjoy this special drink through the cafe and during open mics being planned for Saturday evenings.

But for those who wish to linger a little longer, the International Peace Garden offers the perfect retreat — the opportunity to book a camping spot and immerse oneself in the serenity of nature. Pitch a tent or park an RV beneath the starlit sky, surrounded by the gentle rustle of leaves and the chorus of nocturnal creatures, and discover the true meaning of peace and harmony. Campsites are tailored to your preference, offering Pull-Thru, a convenient dump station, elec/water, and elec only options. Bring your furry friends along as pets are welcome, and enjoy modern comforts with showers and toilets. With 40 sites, including 13 with full hook-ups and 16 with electricity only, you’ll find the perfect spot to reconnect with the great outdoors. Camping is open from May 1 – Oct. 1 and cabin rentals from Oct. 1 – April 30.

As day turns to dusk and the last rays of sunlight dance across the horizon, the International Peace Garden remains a beacon of hope for peace in a world often fraught with chaos and uncertainty. Here, amidst the lush greenery and fragrant blooms, visitors find solace and inspiration, forging connections that transcend borders and unite hearts in a shared appreciation for the beauty of the natural world.
