Area teens will read aloud their own poetry today from 1-3 p.m. at Minot High School-Central Campus during the 10th annual Boom Slam! Poetry slam. The event is free and open to the public.
Language arts teacher Teresa Marquart has taken over the event from her mom, retired teacher Angy Edison. Marquart said the event will be held in person for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. Co-organizer Joe Davis, a nationally-touring spoken word poet, community organizer, and artist educator based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, who is originally from Minot, will also be at the event.
“(This) all began as a dream project Joe had back high school when he was a creative writing student of my mom’s,” said Marquart.
Davis said that Maddie Roberts, a singer-songwriter who attends Central Campus, will open the event with original music. Other students from around the area will perform and will be judged by community judges.
The doors will open at noon. The Slam will begin at 1 p.m. and conclude at 3 p.m. The building will remain open until 4 p.m. with activities before and after the Slam, including a photo booth, shopping at Davis’s merchandise table, looking at the poetry gallery, and socializing.

“Young people are brilliant and our entire community benefits when we create spaces that empower and uplift them! We only rise as high as we lift one another!” said Davis.
